TIME TO STOP FLUORIDATING IN TENNESSEE

CALIFORNIAN OPPOSITION TO FLUORIDE GROWING

According to the Fillmore Gazette in California fluoridation is...
"Ineffective & Harmful, studies show - Opposition: Scientific, Respectable & Growing"
It follows this with an excellent and comprehensive trashing of fluoridations alleged benefits citing all the most recent research and surveys much of it garnered from the Fluoride Action Network.

Over 2,200 professionals urge the US Congress to stop water fluoridation until Congressional hearings are conducted, citing scientific evidence that fluoridation, long promoted to fight tooth decay, is ineffective and has serious health risks. Also, eleven Environmental Protection Agency employee unions representing over 7000 environmental and public health professionals called for a moratorium on drinking water fluoridation programs across the country, and have asked EPA management to recognize fluoride as posing a serious risk of causing cancer in people. (1a)

Last election day, 53 US cities rejected fluoridation joining a growing list of communities saying "No," to fluoridation. (1)

Since the professionals' statement was first issued (Aug 2007), the following occurred:

-- The Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, Canada’s leading voice on environmental health issues, released a statement opposing fluoridation. (2)

-- The National Kidney Foundation dropped its fluoridation support replacing it with this caution: “Individuals with CKD [Chronic Kidney Disease] should be notified of the potential risk of fluoride exposure.” (3)

-- Researchers reporting in the Oct 6 2007 British Medical Journal indicate that fluoridation never was proven safe or effective and may be unethical. (4)

-- “A qualitative review of ...studies found a consistent and strong association between the exposure to fluoride and low IQ,” concluded Tang el al., in "Fluoride and Children’s Intelligence: A Meta-analysis” in Biological Trace Element Research (5)

-- Scientific American editors wrote in January 2008, "Some recent studies suggest that over-consumption of fluoride can raise the risks of disorders affecting teeth, bones, the brain and the thyroid gland"

-- Dr. A. K. Susheela, a leading fluoride expert, explains in a video why US physicians overlook fluoride as a possible cause of diseases commonly caused by fluoride. http://tinyurl.com/Susheela

-- A study in the Fall 2008 Journal of Public Health Dentistry reveals that cavity-free teeth have little to do with fluoride intake. Researchers report, "The benefits of fluoride are mostly topical…while fluorosis is clearly more dependent on fluoride intake."

A Tennessee State legislator who is also an MD is urging all Tennessee Water Districts to stop fluoridation, reported a Tennessee newspaper on 11/29/08. At least 30 Tennessee water districts have already complied with his request.(6)

On 1/5/09, the Burlington Board of Health recommended that Burlington cease fluoridation because fluoridation can harm some people. (7)

On 1/6/09, a Canadian town, Drayton, stopped fluoridation, not to save money, but because it was in the best interests of residents, said the Mayor. (8)

On 2/10/2009 Skagit County, WA officials reversed their 2007 fluoridation decision. (9)

On 3/3/2009, Plainfield, Vermont bans fluoridation. (10)

The Arkansas Oral Health Director is accused of giving eight "false or misleading statements" on fluoridation to an Arkansas legislative Committee. (12)

Nobel Prize winner in Medicine, Dr. Arvid Carlsson, says, “Fluoridation is against all principles of modern pharmacology. It's really obsolete.”

An Online Action Petition to Congress in support of the Professionals' Statement is available on FAN's web site, http://congress.fluorideaction.net/ and over 19,000 individuals have signed so far.

Fluoride jeopardizes health - even at low levels deliberately added to public water supplies, according to data presented in a 2006 National Academy of Sciences' (NAS) National Research Council (NRC) report. Fluoride poses risks to the thyroid gland, diabetics, kidney patients, high water drinkers and others and can severely damage children's teeth. (11) At least three panel members advise avoiding fluoridated water.

“The NRC fluoride report dramatically changed scientific understanding of fluoride's health risks," says Paul Connett, PhD, Executive Director, Fluoride Action Network. "Government officials who continue to promote fluoridation must testify under oath as to why they are ignoring the powerful evidence of harm in the NRC report,” he added.

The Professionals’ Statement also references:

-- The new American Dental Association policy recommending infant formula NOT be prepared with fluoridated water.

-- The CDC’s concession that the predominant benefit of fluoride is topical not systemic.

-- CDC data showing that dental fluorosis, caused by fluoride over-exposure, now impacts one third of American children.

-- Major research indicating little difference in decay rates between fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities.

-- A Harvard study indicating a possible link between fluoridation and bone cancer.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a DC watchdog, revealed that a Harvard professor concealed the fluoridation/bone cancer connection for three years. EWG President Ken Cook states, “It is time for the US to recognize that fluoridation has serious risks that far outweigh any minor benefits, and unlike many other environmental issues, it's as easy to end as turning off a valve at the water plant.”

Clearly whats really needed now is much more legal action. The health problems and dangers associated with fluoride and fluoridation are now blindingly obvious but the ethical, moral and legal issues are still being either ignored or at best underestimated. On this side of the Big Pond, so obvious are the dangers that buffoons such as Peter Ward at the British Dental Association and Professor Lemon(sic) will soon have to invest in incontinence diapers when m'learned friends get their act together and this cannot happen soon enough. For far too long these idiots and their ilk have been ignoring all science and research evidence and misleading the British public. Either they don't understand this evidence or simply dont want to because to even engage in a proper debate would expose them as the frauds they are. How can seat polishers of this low calibre hold down such high ranking positions one might ask and the answer is, equally straight forward. Their puppet masters in the Government are every bit as inept and corrupt so such behaviour is par for the course. Fluoride, safe and effective my arse!

PERMACULTURE -- Doing What Comes Naturally

As it says on their web site, "Permaculture is about creating sustainable human habitats by following nature's patterns." It uses the diversity, stability and resilience of natural ecosystems to provide a framework and guidance for people to develop their own sustainable solutions to the problems facing their world, on a local, national or global scale. It is based on the philosophy of co-operation with nature and caring for the earth and its people."

Pealk oil and the exaustion of energy and other resources is a reality, not just something thought up by tree huggers and, As it said on a recent TV prog on BBC 2, We cannot go on like this. Peak oil has provided us with the means to grow, irrigate, fertilise, transport, distribute, and process huge volumes of food. Even GM food is totally oil dependent. But look at the B side. Industrial and agricultural pollution of air, soil and water often with chemicals which did not exist untill World War 2, the majority of which have never been thoroughly tested has allowed the world to support an enormous population, producing waste in volumes which have over-powered the planets ability to cleanse itself.

Whether we like it or not this cannot go on for very much longer. oil prices will continue to rise as will the costs of all its used to produce. In energy terms no other single source of energy will make up the shortfall. and many believe that even a basket of alternatives such as wind, solar, tidal, geo-thermal and nuclear will not be enough. The UK imports more than 50% of all its food so what do we do when the tankers stop arriving?

iPM has talked about Richard_SM before. He wrote suggesting we look at how the media covers demonstrations. "Tens of thousands sacrificed their time" to attend protests about events in Gaza, but the demos were "hardly covered". He contrasts this with the heckling of a military parade in Luton and the Peter Mandelson green goo incident, which were widely reported.

The media, he says, is "simply creating an environment which encourages violent or outrageous protests in the future to draw attention to their cause".

With a few exceptions, the issue of fluoride and fluoridation has been ignored by the media, despite the fact that its its unethical, immoral, and illegal. The TV and Radio stations, didnt even seem concerned when the governments yes men and women at the SHA and PCT decided to ignore their own rules and 72% - 92% public opposition and throw democracy out of the window in Southamption. Now - put up, or shut up! The fraudulent misrepresentation of the supposed benefits of fluoridation is a scandal that continues unabated. Now an American Attorney has implemented UKCAF's call to use the law to bring the fluoride apologists to heel.

THE AGE OF STUPID -- Celebrating the End of the Beginning

Like Al Gores movies this is a little compressed in its time frame but certainly highly watchable for all those concerned that environmentally speaking we do live in The Age of Stupid.

Although I agree that Global Warming is a fact, I tend to differ with those both in the environmental movement and outside, who consider that this whole scenario all as a result of human activity. Our Sun is a Variable Star and at various times in the history of our little planet, it has experienced major flooding, deserts and almost complete covering by ice.

These conditions can result from the Suns variation in heat output, or from the entire solar system travelling through a large area of dust or gas clouds or even as a result of a major clobbering by a large chunk of rock or ice from the asteroid belt. Life itself can then be reduced to its merely vestigle components and any civilisations have to pick up the pieces and start over.

This of course does not mean that the activities of human beings are entirely innocent nor that we should turn a blind eye to Global warming in either the hope or belief that it will go away because it probably wont and doing absolutely sod all is not an option. Just as the answers to global warming cannot all be solved by wind farms or nuclear power but by a basket of solutions, neither can the causes be reduced to a single "wham bam thank you mam. "But i digress considerably......

The Age of Stupid by Franny Armstrong is both an environmental cry from the heart and a plea for change. As it says in the review by Sukhdev Sandhu Her last documentary, McLibel (2005), saluted two intrepid environmentalists who successfully took on the might of fast-food giant McDonalds. Her latest call to arms is called The Age of Stupid. Beginning in 2055, when London is under water, Vegas under sand, Sydney on fire and the Taj Mahal in ruins, it features Pete Postlethwaite as The Archivist, a sad-eyed man, the last one left on earth, who lives in a tower off Norway using touch-screen technology to find out why it was that people in 2009 did nothing to stop the eco-catastrophe that was staring them in the face.

There are six main stories. Among them that of an octogenarian French mountain guide who has witnessed the swift erosion of the glacier he loves; an Indian entrepreneur bent on setting up a low-budget airline; a British wind-energy developer who tries to persuade other people in his village to support the construction of local turbines.

The Age of Stupid is more passionate, more emotionally charged than the Al Gore-fronted An Inconvenient Truth (2006). It makes energetic use of animation in the style of 1970s public information films. Its use of science fiction is also both effective and emotional: it's as if Armstrong hopes that the future can come to the aid of the present. Bold, supremely provocative, and hugely important, her film is a cry from the heart as much as a roar for necessary change.

See it if you can and if you cannot, then hector your local cinema to screen it. And what as a society can we do about all this. Well we can stop glamourising consumption and start really educating our children rather than training them to be perfect little producer-consumers. The future depends on all of us. As Captain Beefheart said. "Times running out, if all you ever do is blabber and smoke!"
