Consultation reveals strong opposition to fluoride proposals in Southampton

"THREE-quarters of people who responded to a three-month public consultation on controversial plans to add fluoride to Southampton’s tap water said that they did not want it.
An independent phone survey – designed to gauge the reaction of a cross-section of the population – also showed more people against the scheme than for it.
The results were last night hailed by anti-fluoridation campaigners, who said they show that the proposals must now be thrown out.
However, Southampton health chiefs who are behind the scheme say that a public vote cannot be the deciding factor on fluoridation, and other factors must also be taken into consideration. "

Other Factors must include such things as Orders from on High eg; the Government, Large or maybe even blank cheques winging their way between Toxic waste producers and the British Fluoridation Society. and of course the usual suspension of Democracy toward some undisclosed aim, such as war, vested interests, Gongs from the Queen etc etc.

I come from a family which had a long line of genuine socialists (no, not communists, there is a big difference for those who actually bother to check) and consequently i have been a long term labour voter. Now however there is no Labour either as a party or a government. Now there is only New Labour which seems to be where all the old Thatcherites, Neo Cons and Monetarists migrated to from the Tory Party when it became obvious that no one in their right minds would vote for them.

Obviously I can no longer vote for them because I am not a lemming. I dont believe in the surveillance society, the CCTV society, the Bio Metric Passports Society, the ID Card society or the Fingerprinting of Children Society and last but not least the Fluoridation of of our water supplies and most notably, the fluoridation of childrens school milk supplies in Sheffied, St Helens, Knowsley et al. Come to think of it, i dont remember any of the above appearing on the New Labour manifesto so they dont have a mandate, least of all to overide democrasy as a kind of political Viagra, which as you know most politicians need large doses of.... it comes with the territory I understand.


Clearly the Government have never intended the decision to fluoridate to be a matter of real public debate but only now are they actually beginning to admit it. And to think, I always thought the Daily Mail was the paper of lunatics. Sadly the lunatics may have been right all along, I hope i am wrong. In the meantime, its time to plan a local-regional-national campaign of Non-Payment of water rates, and a class action to force the Government to pay for Reverse Osmosis Filters, Bottled Water and a suitable sum to cover other costs and inconveniences. This is after all the only language that these scumbags really understand. As the Punks used to say "No-one is Innocent!" but some are more guilty than others.

MERCURY & FLUORIDE, COCKCROFT & WARD, THE WINGED MESHUGGENERS

Anyone, who like me tends to get the blues on Mondays, would have found the perfect cure if they had watched ITV's "Tonight" program on the subject of Mercury amalgam, which is used in the majority of filling by British dentists. There is a change in the wind it seems and now the EC is becoming increasingly concerned about the prevalence of mercury and its effects on health and many changes in legislation are beginning to filter through in order to reduce its use and tighten up the way it is handled. Norway, Sweden and Denmark have now banned its use in dentistry and other European countries are sure to follow.

A serious matter as I am sure you will agree so why am I sniggering. Well, amidst the serious discussion of Mercury, the third most toxic of all elements, up pops a splendid stand up comic double act,worthy of the Apollo. Put your hands together please for Mssrs Barry (don't call me Bazza) Cockroft. Britains Chief Mental Officer. and Mr Peter Ward, Chief Exec of the British Dental association. Although I had not noticed it before, Wards combination of geniality and shiftiness combined to make him look uncannily like the dude who plays the fat bank manager who admits to a pair of young would-be customers that the generous rates his bank offered were only bait to "hoik" new customers in.

All seemed OK as the interview began but when the ITV reporter tried to pin him down on whether or not he agreed that if mercury was so toxic wasn't he concerned that it could still be put in peoples mouths. Bazza began to look a little more than irritated. I wondered whether he was going to refuse to answer any further questions. but this privilege was left to the Chief Exec of the BDA Mr Peter Ward. When asked similar questions about safety he began to look decidedly shifty and for a moment i thought he would either run away or even jump out of the window. Despite the fact that the questions had been agreed with him in advance he suddenly accused the reporter of trying to manipulate him into saying something which he had already said but claimed he did not.

When the reporter tried again, Ward started to waive his arms about and did the "I cannot hear you la la la la la la la la la fingers in the ears routine." He then put his hand over the camera lens and refused to continue the interview but then having apparently thought better of this, he regained his composure and started again as if nothing had happened. I began to suspect that someone had been on the laughing gas or had already been exposed to a little too much mercury. I am sure I cannot be the only person to be both amazed and amused by this display.

In an earlier posting i accidentally confused Ward and Cockcroft by attributing the eccentric behaviour because i had not seen the whole of the program but recourse to the ITV player helped me untangle the confusion. My eyesight has never been very good and reading captions on a small screen can be difficult and in view of the preposterous things that Bazza Cockcroft has said in the past it was easy to assume that the crazier of the two was he. Still, it was a privalage to see him upstaged by Peter Ward.

On the 12th February when questioned about the Which? magazine survey which highlighted the continued shortage of dentists and people so desperate that they were extracting their own teeth, Cockcroft said "These findings come from an online multiple choice survey that has no statistical credibility. It is ludicrous to suggest that three million people are doing DIY dentistry. DIY dentistry is dangerous and unnecessary. Thanks to our investment of over £2bn in NHS dentistry, there are now lots of new NHS dental practices expanding and opening around the country." But this answer only begged another question. If it was true that there are now lots of new NHS dental practices expanding and opening around the country, why was this necessary when only a handful of years earlier, there were plenty of good dentists in all areas and no sign of shortage.?

Of course it must be a mere coincidence that this shortage of dentistry happened soon after New Labour took power and started its tinkering and re-invention of the wheel. How tragic that Old Labour even with its failings had nonetheless succeeded in creating a Health Service that made us the envy of the world and proud to be British only to have its work undone not only by the privitising Thatcherites but also by New Labour and its many glove puppets like our Bazza and Pete.

Well I am very sorry Messrs Cockcroft and Ward, but I am afraid that neither of you are really cut out for this dentistry business so we will have to let you go, but i am sure you will soon find more suitable work at the Hackney Empire. And, don't forget to take that mercury and fluoride with you. With material like yours, you will almost certainly need some props. Miss Jones, Will you show in Harry and Paul please.

As the final decision by South Central and the threat of fluoridation of water in Southampton and Hampshire draws ever closer. I am printing in full, submissions from another four leading authorities on fluoridation and its toxic effects.

Living in Scotland, I did not contribute to the formal consultation. However, the decision in Southampton, whichever way it goes, has more than local significance and I hope you will allow me to put an oar in at this late stage.I endorse what Drs Paul Connett, Hardy Limeback and some others have recently written to you on this subject, and only wish to add some remarks about risk. Advocates and opponents of fluoridation approach risk in completely different and conflicting ways. Advocates state that hundreds of studies carried out over more than 60 years show that fluoridation is safe. What they actually mean is that population comparisons of various diseases have not proved conclusively that fluoridation is harmful. That is not at all the same thing, since these studies rarely concerned themselves with potentially vulnerable subgroups, nor were they sensitive enough to detect small differences. Moreover, as shown by the York Review (A Systematic Study of Water Fluoridation, 2002), many were of inherently low quality. This much-cited review was unfortunately restricted by its terms of reference to the impact of fluoridation per se on human health. It did not deal with wider evidence. It did not conclude that fluoridation was safe, as advocates of fluoridation constantly claim, merely that it found little evidence, except for fluorosis, that it was not safe.Proponents of fluoridation work on the assumption that unless fluoridation, per se, has been proved to be harmful, then it is perfectly legitimate to continue and extend the practice. They are very clear about it: the onus of direct proof is on the objectors. They show no interest in indirect evidence of harm and if they have ever heard of the precautionary principle, they do not care to mention it in public.For example, they dismiss as irrelevant the authoritative National Research Council (Fluoride in Drinking Water: a Scientific Review of EPA's Standards, 2006) on the specious grounds that it does not deal specifically with water fluoridated at 1 part/million. Yet the report does provide a wealth of evidence that 4 parts/million in drinking water is _not_ safe in a range of health contexts including the skeleton, thyroid and, perhaps most ominously, the developing brain. I don't believe that any toxicologist would regard a safety factor of less than four as adequate for continuous mass-medication, particularly when athletes, diabetics and kidney patients may drink far more than the generally assumed one litre/day. I doubt that you would either. In sum the many studies reviewed by the NRC panel are indeed highly relevant to fluoridation and identify risks that are far from trivial in scale and variety. Even if some of the studies are not quite ofgold-standard quality, to ignore them and insist on direct proof is wholly irresponsible and smacks of hubris.Even when confronted with a careful study (Bassin et al 2006, cited in SHA Consultation Document) demonstrating directly that consumption of fluoridated water in childhood can lead to a several-fold rise in the incidence of osteosarcoma in young men, fluoridation proponents have brushed it aside on the pretext that it needs repeating and falls short of definitive proof. (Bassin herself described it as 'exploratory' . However, the cautionary note by Douglass, also cited in the Document, should be given little weight since the author had a large axe to grind.) It is true that, like all important findings, it needs confirmation. But such work is difficult and may take years. Meanwhile, fluoridationists appear to think that the risk of this unpleasant and life-threatening (albeit rare) tumour can be ignored, while fluoridation continues in the interests of its alleged benefits. If ever there was a situation in which the precautionary principle should apply, mass medication of large populations, potentially over an entire lifetime, must surely be it. Dental caries in children is a real problem that has been dealt with in other parts of the world through education, better diet and improved access to dental care. I appreciate that the SHA has been pursuing these approaches in Southampton and still feels that further intervention is desirable, but fluoridating the water is not the answer. However, no matter how many proponents exist, I've yet to hear a convincing argument favoring water fluoridation. Unfortunately, decisions seem all too often to be based on politics, rather than science. In addition, most talk show hosts, and seemingly public decision makers, don't know enough about the issue to even ask the right questions. One of the most frequent supportive arguments notes support of certain professional dental organizations. However, you'll find these organizations are more representative of the economic concerns of their members, than health concerns of the public. Learning that the fluoride in question is not the same substance used in toothpaste, but rather a hazardous waste rerouted from chemical fertilizer plants, it raises flags of caution, and for this I join FAN, and hope you would, as well, in opposing forced fluoridation on your community. Here's why. 1. In my first public statement on the subject as a family doctor and local government medical officer I supported the policy as do most of the Australia government authorities still. This prompted opponents of the policy to bring my attention to specific scientific reports about 50 years ago. It has been my intention ever since to satisfy myself of the reliability of arguments on both sides. As national Minister for Health 1972-75 and regional (western Pacific) Vice President at the 1975 World Health Assembly I was unable to get reassurance from my departmental experts and advisers who supported fluoridation. 2. There is no minimum water fluoride intake claimed by pro-fluoride officials as necessary to prevent dental decay. There are decay-free teeth among unfluoridated communities and rampant decay leading to nearly total dental clearance among consumers of water fluoridated at officially recommended levels. Breast milk in both fluoridated and other communities contains below 0.5 per cent of the officially "optimum" fluoride concentration of water. 3. Official drives for more fluoridation in my country claim fluoridation reduces decay by "up to 40 per cent". That is selective assessment. Some studies show the "up to" difference closer to 0 per cent, with the 40 per cent more decay affecting a fraction of a single decayed tooth surface on average. Several studies have concluded that application of fluoride to tooth enamel by dental therapy or tooth paste is much more effective than fluoridation while avoiding swallowing of fluoride which benefits no-one. 4. Tooth enamel is the only tissue known to include fluoride normally. Swallowed fluoride is not proven harmless in studies aimed at testing effects beyond the teeth. Pro-fluoridation authorities acknowledge that levels not greatly above their recommended "optimum" are dangerous, and fluoridation increases the prevalence of dental fluorosis - mottled teeth, the earliest sign of fluoride toxicity. 5. Ill effects in other organs and functions including bone, brain and thyroid are still awaiting confirmation or disproof, and medical precautionary policies should rule out fluoridation till such studies are made. There has been unexplained delay in publishing Harvard University findings of increased bone sarcoma in young males. [I believe that Dr. Everingham is referring here to the long delay in the promised study by Douglass et al. which purportedly refutes the Bassin et al. (2006) study which found a 5 to 7 fold increase in osteosarcoma associated with young males exposed to fluoridated water in their 6th, 7th and 8th years. In the same issue of the journal where the Bassin study was published Douglass promised a study by the Summer of 2006. After two and half years we are still waiting for the refutation. Meanwhile, Douglass's letter is being used by proponents as if it was study!]6. Officials in fluoridating regimes may be deterred from frank testing of toxic outcomes by fear of loss of professional acceptance. Dr Waldbott who once led the US AMA's allergy section was apparently ostracised when he published findings of fluoride allergy. Whistleblower scientists and clinicians in the few remaining fluoridating countries have noted that fluoride waste in fertiliser and metal smelting industries, formerly costly to dispose of without agricultural and other environmental damage, has become a profitable by-product in water used much more for cleaning and other uses than for drinking.7. Those opposing fluoridation should have the right to refuse mass medication at an uncontrolled dosage in accord with medical ethics. I couldn't look at these children without baulking. During a visit to the United States in 1994 I met a young lady during a conference on 'Dioxin' in St Louis. We began talking about toxins as one does in such a situation and when she opened her mouth I was appalled at the state of her teeth. They were heavily mottled brown and white, something she was very aware of by her manner of bringing her hand to cover her mouth whenever she laughed.I know now that there was nothing wrong with this young lady's dental hygiene, in fact she was exemplarity in her cleanliness, but she lived in a fluoridated town in the US.Meeting people face to face is an important part of life. To be embarrassed by the state of your teeth when you smile restricts the opportunities available to anyone in many walks of life, socially and professionally.It is all very well saying sufferers of dental fluorosis (the obvious visual sign of fluoride poisoning) can have 'cosmetic treatment. ' The reality is cost restricts the number of people who can actually afford this treatment.As the editor and publisher of ToxCat and Director of Communities Against Toxics I have researched the impact of various chemicals on human health. The meeting in St Louis alerted me to one of the realities of fluoride being added to drinking water.Another meeting I attended opened my eyes even more of this issue. I attended an interview conducted on Manchester breakfast TV where Dr. Paul Connett was invited to comment on fluoridation. Also invited was Economist Guy Harkin of the North West Fluoridation Evaluation, a group that had the task of recommending on whether to add fluoride to the drinking water of Manchester.Even though Harkin's was supposed to be looking into the issue of fluoride and his recommendations would be very influential, it was blatantly obvious he was already a strong supporters of fluoride 'mass medication', despite demonstrating no knowledge (or even interest) in the studies indicating health risks. He shamefully regurgitated parrot-fashion the pro-fluoride script, showing no original self-thoughts.When asked by Dr Connett after the programme if he had read the latest 500 page report from the US National Research Council Harkin replied after some embarrassing coughing and spluttering "I have read a summary.""What were the conclusions? " asked Dr Connett. Harkin couldn't answer, made a feeble excuse and rushed away out of the studio.It was obvious this man hadn't read the summary and I personally doubt he even knew of existence of the US National report. Yet he was going to recommend adding fluoride to the drinking water of millions. Unbelievable! The blind ignorance of the pro-fluoride lobbyists has to be seen to be believed.I am 62 years of age and have never had a filling. The last serious dental treatment I had was for the removal of a troublesome tooth in 1966. The way to prevent bad cavities is by good dental practices like brushing frequently. It is not ethical to expect everyone to swallow an industrial poison with every drink, salad washing or shower because some parents are too lazy to teach their child good dental hygiene. Also, we are advised not to take or share medications prescribed to us or others, yet the government is proposing to do exactly that by mass medicating us all.How can you calculate the safe dose for a 1 week old baby and a 20 stone man? Why are there warnings on fluoride containing toothpaste stating if a child swallows more than a pea sized quantity of toothpaste to seek medical help, if fluoride is harmless if swallowed?Also, how does this warning tie in with the additional fluoride the adding of fluoride to our drinking water will exposure our children to? (Washing, showering, food washing, concentrated soft drinks etc).The science /evidence being pushed by the government is extremely dubious.I am asking you to look seriously at this issue not only on health grounds but also ethically, and ask you not to blindly follow the governments wishes. Their refusal to debate this issue openly and seriously throws serious doubts on their claims of fluorides safety. It is my understanding that the Southampton Health Authority is contemplating a program of water fluoridation for the city of Southampton. I am writing to let you know that this practice has come under considerable criticism in the USA in light of recent findings that fluoride is a neurotoxin and increases the risk of bone cancer in young boys. The National Research Council here has concluded that the current regulation of water fluoridation does not protect the whole population (as required by our Safe Drinking Water Act). The union representing scientists at our Environmental Protection Agency (the toxicologists and epidemiologists who provide the professional analysis of toxic chemicals) have called for an end to water fluoridation in the USA.Even the two leading proponents of fluoridation, the American Dental Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, have conceded that infants are harmed by the use of fluoridated tap water in reconstituted infant formula. If the infants are harmed by this chemical, how on Earth can you put it into the water supply?At a time when Europe is leading the world in the proper regulation of toxic chemicals it would be a terrible mistake for your Authority to begin fluoridating Southampton' s water. It is obvious from the monetary, practical and moral support we have received from the public and the letters published in the Echo that overwhelmingly, Southampton does not want fluoridation. If the decision is made to implement fluoridation then only one group of people is responsible - the Southern Central SHA Board.A record of the way they vote should be kept so that if in the future circumstances prove that the objections raised against fluoridation are valid whether locally or internationally then these are the people who are responsible for any harm done.

Who else is responsible for the never ending push for fluoridation in recent years? Number one is:

Andy Burnham, Leigh's Labour MP filed an early day motion calling for the fluoridation of water. He said "My message is blunt: it is time to stop a vocal, letter-writing minority standing in the way of a progressive change that will benefit millions of people in Britain, especially in our most deprived communities." "I suggest that the tiny minority of the population who do care are well off enough to afford Evian."

Mr. John Denham MP for Southampton who at the time was the Minister of State, Department of Health said in a speech in Parliament "The evidence shows that fluoridation of the water supply to the optimum level of one part per million can reduce the amount of tooth decay in children from similar backgrounds by one third to a half" "There is currently evidence of just one minor, cosmetic side effect of fluoridation--dental fluorosis, or slight tooth mottling. Where water is fluoridated at the optimal level of one part per million and parents follow the instructions on fluoridated toothpaste to ensure that children do not swallow excessive amounts, that is seldom noticeable. The teeth are still endowed with extra resistance. If someone is concerned about the cosmetic effect, dentists have several remedies. Often a satisfactory outcome can be achieved by the dentist who polishes the teeth"

Alan Whitehead MP blindly follows the government line "Be assured that government policy on the matter will follow only what the most up-to-date scientific research indicates is permissible".

OUTBREAK OF RABIES IN QUEENSLAND ?

If the following report is to be believed. According to a GreenDay Media exclusive report forwarded by a Google Alert. " The Bligh Government is To Consider More Medications In Tap Water - including Chemicals To Fight Depression, Headaches And Obesity. What follows could easily be a hoax but as she has undoubtedly already made many enemiesi i would welcome any verification i can get from Australia. If any of this is true however, i cannot think of anything i have read which is more chilling since the speeches of Hitler leading up to World War II.

"A Government source has revealed that Anna Bligh has been approached by leading chemical companies eager to add ‘community benefits’ to tap water.The Government has expressed interest in ‘tap water therapies’, and recently added fluoride to Brisbane region’s
water supply to fight tooth decay.

Bligh has become an ‘instant celebrity’ in the eyes of the drug and chemical companies,’ a spokesman for ChemWatch reported. ‘Manufacturers see tap water as a great profit stream, and are seeking Government approval for at least 15 more additives.’

‘We are interested in the health and welfare of the community, and we’ll consider these additives as they are presented to us,’ Bligh said. "We believe that besides tooth decay, there are a number of health issues we can help the public overcome. We know most people are lazy, they are uneducated, and they are a burden on the hospital system, so we believe we have a mandate to protect them by whatever means we have at our disposal.

’Despite warnings from scientists worldwide, and evidence that fluoride was a poison, Bligh was adamant. ‘I don’t care what the scientists say. My reports are all I need. I don’t care about community protests, and meetings, and all those letters and complaints I receive.
My job is to work with the chemical companies, to deliver medications, whether people like it or not. If people don’t like it, they can go live in Fiji.’

Our agenda is part of the global push to fight obesity, depression, anxiety, headaches, chronic fatigue and even cancer with tap water therapy. We have fluoride, and we can do a lot more given the research I have seen.’ Bligh added.

I hope for all our sakes that this is a hoax but in the meantime, I advise anyone encountering a deranged woman foaming at the mouth to avoid all contact and notify the police and veterinary authorities immediately. Do not have a go!

The new Anglers' Trust -- Are they Awake to Fluoride Dangers?

According to a Guardian report by John Vidal and Graham Mole on Wednesday 14 January. Six fishing groups have joined forces to become the new Anglers Trust. This could make them one of the biggest conservation bodies in Europe, with the political muscle to rival the National Trust, the RSPB and Friends of the Earth.

They hope to sign up one in five of Britains 2.7m regular anglers, who are divided more or less equally between sea and inland water fishing enthusiasts. Mark Lloyd, chief executive of the new organisation said, "Anglers are not the usual woolly liberals you get in the WWF or the National Trust. They range across urban and rural areas and comprise both working and upper class members. Together they are very powerful,"

They are very concerned about declining fish stocks, river pollution, and industrial developments for, as they say, there's little point fishing if there's no fish, so half the work will be campaigning. The new organisation will be able to represent all anglers much more efficiently and effectively at national and international level, something which the the small angling groups could not do.

The trust which includes coarse, game and river anglers is expected to lobby government and corporations reverse the damage caused by over-fishing, and sand and gravel extraction, and to prosecute polluters and reduce the volume of water taken from rivers. They also plan to campaign to stop farmed fish escaping into the wild. Anglers have long been regarded as the eyes and ears of the water environment: alerting the authorities about damage to British waters and frequently prosecuting polluters.

I for one hope that they will also turn their attention to the prospect of water fluoridation which the British Government is insanely pushing on an unwilling public. Perhaps when they realise that 97% of all fluoridated water will not even touch people or their teeth at all, will be discharged immediately into our river system from our drains via the sewage treatment plants.

Research in the USA discovered that fluoride levels in river water as low as 0.21 parts per million could stop Salmon spawning but water fluoridation entails levels of 1.0 parts per million plus, not including fluoride pollution from industry and other agricultureal food sources. Some foods especially teas, contain rather high levels of fluoride as do crops sprayed with pesticides and many processed foods. Add to this tens of thousands of tonnes of the toxic waste known as hedafluorsilicic acid which water fluoridation will entail, we should not be surprised to see the hard work of the Environment Agency and the Anglers pressure groups thrown into reverse.

Anglers are not alone when it comes to facing a major threat from fluoridation. Any organic food grower who relies on river water for irrigation is also in for a nasty shock when they find their produce is no longer fit for accreditation by the Soil Association who are also concerned by the threat the fluoridation poses. and not attractive to members of the public looking for chemical free food.

FLUORIDE, BFS SICK TO THE BACK TEETH.

The British Fluoridation Society (BFS) not content with poisoning our water supplies, are now trying to poison or damage our freedom of speech. They have got a real strop on about pictures of teeth damaged by dental fluorosis on UKCAF handouts, one of which you can see on this blog. The pictures show what is described as "moderate fluorosis" a condition common in many fluoridated parts of the world and also in places where fluoride occurs naturally. Texas USA and India come immediately to mind. The BFS clearly dont like the idea that this embarassing and disfiguring condition can occur in childrens' teeth if fluoride is added to our water supplies. The Governments own York Review and Hampshires' Water Fluoridation Panel agree on this. The pictures in question are graphic evidence of what children may expect as a result.

The BFS are so furious about this that they have referred the hand outs to the Advertising Standards Authority although personally I cannot actually see why the ASA should be involved at all. After all, UKCAF are not selling anything and one would think that News or Opinion or Fair Comment would not be within the ASAs remit. I have seen other pictures from various places which show teeth in even worse conditions than those on the UKCAF hand outs and they are far from pretty.

One could be forgiven for thinking that the UK Councils Against Fluoride would themselves be at least irritated by this but on the contrary, they are delighted. As UKCAF puts it, "At last the BFS is being forced to justify its obstinate rejection of internationally accepted scientific evidence in a public forum. We will be posting both sides' arguments here as this long-awaited confrontation develops - so watch this space!

Perhaps we will at last see the BFS produce some up to date evidence that fluoride really is "safe and effective" or even just effective at all. Sadly the BFS like the British Dental Association and the American Dental Association often make these sweeping statements, but generally factual scientific data which actually justifies fluoride or water fluoridation is about as common as fairy turds.
