FLUORIDATION AND DRINKING WATER CAMPAIGN
NEWSLETTER
5th JUNE 2012
UNITED KINGDOM
Hello Ann,
Is there a scientific reason why aluminium is added to so many things? Its purpose can't be the same in each case, can it? Someone had actually told me many years ago that aluminium in deodorants was rumoured to cause breast cancer. Could it be that some organisations are making a mint out of its sale and have created the demand? Could it be another case, as with fluoride, that its use is just a money-spinner for big industry? Does aluminium have to appear always in the ingredients list? Has anybody publicised its threat to our health?
I wouldn't know where to find the answers to my questions, would you?
Hoping for guidance.
Cheers,
Eileen

D. Telegraph 2.6.12 “DOCTORS PUZZLED AS HUNDREDS HIT BY MYSTERY STOMACH BUG”
Scientists are investigating a large outbreak of a virulent stomach bug, which can last for months, linked to water contamination. They’ve found 267 cases since May caused by the cryptosporidium parasite. The North-East, Yorkshire, & West & East Midlands have been affected.
(My comment: In affected areas boiling the water before drinking it can kill it.)

US poultry farmers are still using an iDear Ann,
We have been trying to tell the antifluoride people this for ages, look at our website www.ukcaf.org . My partner Doug Cross was the husband of Carole Cross and as a scientist was dealing with the Camelford crisis at the time as he realised that the official people like the water company and the Dept of Health were not doing anything. He collected samples of water and animals and arranged for them to be examined.
Doug is a member of the Lowermoor Sub-Group of the Food Standards Agency's Committee on Toxicity investigating the medical effects of the 1988 incident.. He was the first scientist to do any investigation He is a Fellow of the Society of Biology, and has been collaborating with Chris Exley for the past 8 years on identifying new victims and ensuring that the necessary post mortem samples are secured for examination - without his help Chris Exley would not have been able to do his research on Carole and other Camelford victims. .
Doug has recently posted a commentary on the significance of a new review of the link between aluminium and Alzheimer's Disease (see www.ukcaf.org) and this puts the issue firmly into perspective from the fluoridation point of view. So I am surprised that you have not mentioned this connection - it provides the most powerful argument yet against fluoridation.
It is particularly annoying to me that the antifluoride people for reasons which are difficult to fathom often take no notice of what UKCAF has on its site, we are very careful to print only what we can prove.
It is not just Doug's work that is underestimated - for the past 24 years I have worked with local councils across the country preventing new fluoridation schemes from being introduced. I worked with our local Council, Barrow in Furness, to organise all the councils in the North West in NWCAF in 1988 when an area from Carlisle to High Peak in Derbyshire was threatened with fluoridation.
This was before the days of emails and internet so it was not easy to give or arrange presentations to councils. Fluoridation was turned down in 1992 by the NW Water (United Utilities now) who decided that " we are not going to fluoridate as the councils, not we, represent the views of the majority of our customers"
On the strength of this I was immediately asked to be on the NPWA Committee and made chairman, a position I held for over 15 years. After Jane Jones died George Glasser and I continued to run the NPWA but it was becoming increasingly obvious that we had much greater power to defeat fluoridation if we concentrated our efforts via UKCAF. So we left NPWA and many of our advisors chose to leave with us and speak on behalf of the councils.
To date we have had considerable success, here are some of the results that UKCAF has obtained:
1. Exposing the sham that was the National Fluoride Information Centre at Manchester University. This led first to the Government ending their financial support, and then shutting diown the sham altogether (our website page exposing this fraud is still one of the most popular pages on the site, with worldwide visitors!).
2.Dr Sheila Gibson and I gave a successful presentation to NICE, speaking against Prof Lennon and the head of the BDA. Both left early, before the committee could finish questioning them.
3 Dr Gibson and I visited the Welsh Assembly and discussed fluoridation and gave information to all their political parties with great help from MP Peter Hain's office.
4. During the Winchester hearing before Hampshire County Council, Doug and I had a discussion with Southern Water's Chief of operations and their solicitor about the legitimacy of the planned fluoridation scheme - the solicitor did a hasty runner!
5. Later we were invited by the Chief Executive of Southern Water to discus the legal issues at the highest levels.
Last year we had a long meeting with Severn Trent's Chief Exec and Director, at which we discussed the legal issues that they face, and Dr Tony Lees told them of the very real problems of children in the West Midland who have badly damaged teeth from dental fluorosis.
6. Late last year with Dr Gibson we had a very good meeting with Scotland's most senior Health Minister in which we discussed - once agin - the legal issues involved. As a qualified solicitor, the Minister understood the points we made and said that fluoriodation will not be permitted in Scotland.
7. Behind the scenes we had highly sensitive discussions with security forces on the Isle of Man that played an important part in the Island's Tynwald throwing out all prospects of future fluoridation on the Island.
8. We were guest speakers at a meeting in Limerick, Southern Ireland, at the invitation of a very prominent Irish MEP.
9 With Dr Paul McCormick Barrister at Law, UKCAF officially represents Northen Ireland Councils Against Fluoridation with regard to to their position in debates in Westminster.
10. In collaboration with Robert Pocock, we have been exposing the incompetance and corruption in the European Commission before the European Parliament and the EC Petitions committee - by allowing Robert's Petition to stand, MEPs are now ganging up to put pressure on the EU to order the UK and Irish governments to enforce the Medicines directive with regard to fluoridation - and you know very well what THAT means!
11. The new paper in Medical Law International by Dr David Shaw, exposing the government's claim that 'fluoride is not a medicine' as nothing but a convenient 'legal fiction' is a huge step forward in establishing the validity of Doug's long-standing work on the issue of the illegitimcy of fluoridation under EC and UK law.
12. Doug's latest commentary is on the importance of the recent publications by world leaders in aluminium toxicology research (a field that he actually poineered back in the 1960s) of the role of fluoride in the absorption of aluminium and its transportation to the brain, causing Alzheimer's Disease. This relationship provides the most powerful argument yet that fluoridation cannot be permitted to continue.
I am disappointed that after so much work over more than twenty years it should apear necessary for me to have to justify myself and the work of UKCAF, But when even people working on our own side against the fluoride proponents repeatedly spparently prefer to accept the often sloppy reporting and unsound opinions of others instead of taking the trouble to read and understand our own reports and analyses, you will appreciate why we are less than impressed by the confusion that results.

llegal broad-spectrum antibiotic in animal feeds that was banned for agricultural use in 2005.
It is also used for pigs & cattle feed. The antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones were banned by America’s Food & Drug Admin because their over-use is increasing possible development of drug-resistant superbugs, & yet this antibiotic was found in 8 of 12 samples of animal feeds tested. The fluoroquinolones are an important group of antibiotics (including ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin & ofloxacin) because they are first-line treatments for serious bacterial infections in humans.
(Environ Sci Technol, 46: 3795-802)
(My comment: These drugs contain fluoride. Google: ‘fluoroquinolones’ as are there is quite a lot about these fluoride drugs. The Wikipedia one on fluoroquinolones is quite good.)

Germany taken to court over water charges
The European Commission is taking Germany to the EU court because it believes the country's water pricing system breaches the water framework directive (WFD). The move was announced along with several other infringement actions on Thursday.
The directive requires member states to pass on the true costs of water services to domestic, industrial and agricultural users to encourage efficiency.
Germany only applies this principle to drinking water supply and wastewater treatment. The commission says the WFD's definition is much broader, encompassing water used for hydropower, navigation, industrial cooling and irrigation.
It has already given Germany several warnings over the matter and is investigating similar breaches in seven other member states: Austria, the Flanders region of Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Netherlands and Sweden. Ireland is also in breach but expected to change its legislation soon.

h two final warnings before court action over their implementation of environmental legislation on Thursday.
Greece's warnings were for failing to treat urban wastewater in 12 regions to EU standards, and over the Kiato landfill in the Peloponnese, which is operating without a permit and is a serious threat to health and the environment, the commission says.
Romania has failed to notify the commission of its transposition of updated bans on hazardous metals under the end-of-life vehicles directive. This was meant to be done by the end of 2011 and Slovakia has received a warning about the same issue.
Both Romania and Hungary were given warnings for breaching the habitats directive's rules on impact assessments. In Romania, this relates to a beach development approved on the Black Sea in Sulina and in Hungary to clear-cutting in the Sár-éger forest, which is part of a Natura 2000 protected site.
Finally, the commission issued a warning to Italy about its pre-treatment of waste at the Malagrotta landfill in the Lazio region and possibly other sites in the area.
The Italian authorities' narrow interpretation of the 1999 landfill directive means that some waste has not received the mechanical-biological pre-treatment required to stabilise its organic content, says the commission.

Water quality
proposal meets council opposition
A large group of member states is opposed to adding three pharmaceutical substances to a list of chemicals regulated under EU water law. Some also have reservations about other proposals made by the EU executive in this area.
An information note prepared by the Danish presidency of the EU ahead of a meeting of environment ministers in Luxembourg next week lists a number of remarks from unnamed representatives during discussions in the Council of Ministers.
These comments relate to various changes to the list of so-called priority substances, which includes setting environmental quality standards (EQSs) for two substances used in contraceptive pills (EE2 and E2) and anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac.
In its draft directive put forward at the end of January, the European Commission also sought to add 12 other substances to the list, six of which would be classified as priority hazardous substances. Another proposal consists of introducing stricter EQSs for four substances that are already on the list.
Some member state representatives believe that the scientific justifications given by the commission are insufficient. The EU executive contests this argument, insisting its proposals are based on a thorough assessment of the situation.
Questions have also been raised over the effectiveness of the proposals. Some national delegations believe certain substances should be regulated under EU product legislation rather than the water framework directive and the EQS directive.
Others want a voluntary participation in the proposed monitoring mechanism, or watch-list, for chemicals that may pose environmental and health risks. And they say fewer substances should be monitored. The commission has proposed that up to 25 chemicals or groups of substances should be on this watch-list.
Member states support the flexibility offered regarding the monitoring of eight priority substances described as ubiquitous, persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (u-PBT). Several delegations have even proposed excluding u-PBTs from the assessment of rivers' chemical status, which the EU executive opposes.

Letter: Fluoride is a harmful chemical especially to children
St. Augustine
Editor: I’d like to respond to a reader’s letter regarding the perceived need to have fluoridated drinking water. I am aware of numerous studies documenting the adverse effects of ingesting fluoride. For starters, a prominent warning appears on every tube of toothpaste containing fluoride that, in the event more toothpaste than used for brushing (meaning pea size) is accidentally swallowed, medical help should be obtained or a poison control center contacted right away. Those are not idle words. Our nation’s poison control centers receive thousands of calls each year relating to the toxic effects of excessive ingestion of fluoride.
Fact is that fluoride has never been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, and attempts by legislators to persuade the FDA to do the necessary tests to ascertain whether it is safe for human consumption have not borne fruit thus far. Only 3 percent of European countries fluoridate their drinking water, with 97 percent having concluded that this substance at best does not prevent cavities and at worst is toxic to their citizens. It is inexcusable in my mind to subject the population as a whole, but especially our children, to an unapproved drug.
I would consider it a violation of my right to informed consent, were fluoride to be added to my drinking water. As an aside, I am aware of scientific studies indicating that fluoride lowers children’s IQs! Maybe the fact that St. Johns County water is not fluoridated is part of our children’s educational success. In addition, about 95 percent of any fluoridated water “goes down the drain” via showers, toilets, washers, etc. Would that not be a considerable waste of resources in these economic times?
